ConcreteWorks 2024: Bridging the Gap: AI Solutions for Concrete Producers

BCMI President and CEO Craig Yeack joined a panel of industry experts, including technology partners Andrew Fahim with Giatec and Thomas Bergmans with INFORM, to discuss AI Solutions for Concrete Producers and its potential benefits and also impacts on the concrete industry.

Yeack kicked off the discussion by referencing computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton who won the Nobel Prize in physics and issued a warning about AI. He compared it to the Industrial Revolution, except this time instead of machines replacing physical labor, it will be intellectual ability.

“We have no idea how to deal with something smarter than us,” Yeack reiterated.

With AI, it might be tempting to assume the results it generates are the best answer or smartest response. How does one measure that? And who is liable for potential mistakes? Looking at AI as an expert might mean we do not look to industry experts to verify the results we are given. And AI always thinks it’s right, Yeack added.

The panel discussed this scenario and others that cause concern for materials producers when considering the evolving world of AI for business.  Only time will tell how these tools will impact our industry. Producers and tech providers must continue working together to prepare for upcoming challenges.
